5 Signs You're Dating a Narcissist (And What to Do Next)

How I Spotted the Red Flags (And You Can Too)

I started Narc Free Zone because I lived it. I knew something was wrong long before I had the words for it. If you're reading this, you might be in that same space — feeling like something is off but not being able to name it.

Here are five signs that helped me see clearly. I hope they help you too.

1. Everything Feels Like Your Fault

Narcissists are master deflectors. No matter what happens — a fight, a missed dinner, a bad mood — somehow it circles back to you. You apologize for things you didn't do. You second-guess your own memory. Over time, you stop trusting your own instincts.

The truth: If you're always the one apologizing, you're not the problem.

2. Love Feels Like a Rollercoaster

One day you're the love of their life. The next day you can't do anything right. This cycle — idealization followed by devaluation — is called the narcissistic abuse cycle, and it's designed to keep you off-balance. When they're sweet, you hold on. When they're cruel, you try harder.

The highs feel incredible because the lows feel devastating. That contrast isn't love — it's control.

3. Your Circle Keeps Getting Smaller

When was the last time you saw your friends without explaining where you were going? Narcissists isolate you slowly. It starts with small comments — "Why do you hang out with her?" — and ends with you barely recognizing anyone outside the relationship.

If your world has gotten smaller since you started dating them, pay attention.

4. They Never Apologize (Like, Never)

A real apology sounds like: "I'm sorry. I was wrong. How can I fix it?" A narcissist's apology sounds like: "I'm sorry you feel that way." Or worse — they flip it so you end up apologizing to them.

If they can never own a mistake, they can never grow. And if they can't grow, neither can the relationship.

5. You're Exhausted All the Time

Not from work or life — from the relationship itself. Walking on eggshells takes real energy. Monitoring your tone, rehearsing conversations, bracing for the next explosion — that's not how love should feel.

Your body knows before your brain does. Listen to the exhaustion.

What to Do Next

If you recognized yourself in these signs, here's what I want you to know: You're not crazy. You're not too sensitive. And you're not alone.

Here's what helped me:

  • Talk to someone. A therapist, a trusted friend, a support group. Breaking the silence is the first step.
  • Document everything. Write down what happened, when it happened. Narcissists gaslight — your notes are your proof.
  • Start planning your exit. You don't have to leave today, but start building your independence — financially, emotionally, socially.
  • Wear your truth. For me, that meant putting these words on shirts. Every design in the Narc Free Zone collection started as something I needed to hear.

You Deserve Better

Walking away from a narcissist isn't just a breakup — it's a rescue mission. You're rescuing yourself. And you deserve to come home.

If you're in that healing era, I made something for you. Check out the Narc Free Zone collection — shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts for women who chose themselves.

You're not alone. You're just getting started.
